Fritz Heider and Marianne Simmel showed college students a brief animated film in which a few geometric shapes move around the screen, in and around a large rectangle, in randomly determined ways. The students were simply instructed to watch the movie and “write down what happened.” One of the thirty-four movie watchers described the film literally: “A large solid triangle is shown entering a rectangle. It enters and comes out of this rectangle, and each time the corner and one-half of one of the sides of the rectangle form an opening.” That guy was on his own. Nearly everyone else read more into it, telling a story about people, like this one:
A man has planned to meet a girl, and the girl comes along with another man. […]
