in these classes that I was told that a minority of the human population being gay was potentially adaptive for ancestral tribes because these individuals could help support the overall community without spending energy on their own children. [...] like women who have passed menopause or people who could never bear children. [...] I have come to think of such ideas as deeply problematic, and at least partially incorrect. This is because it seems so obvious that these evolutionary arguments center heterosexuality.

When French children hear “un avion” (an airplane), which is pronounced with a liaison (the n of “un” melds into the a of “avion”), they improperly infer the existence of the word navion (“Regarde le navion!”). Conversely, English speakers imported the French word napperon (place mat) and, due to incorrect parsing of the phrase un napperon, invented the word apron.

American roulette:aru_0160:

在读 Running on Empty: Overcome Your Childhood Emotional Neglect,是象友推荐的来着,读了四分之一,读得我好迷茫啊。。

“Let the ‘environment’ of women be similar to that of men and with his opportunities, before she be fairly judged, intellectually his inferior, please.”

It was the world that was absent-minded and it was Pnin whose business it was to set it straight. His life was a constant war with insensate objects that fell apart, or attacked him, or refused to function, or viciously got themselves lost as soon as they entered the sphere of his existence.

[…] we work more effectively, scientists have found, when we continually alter our study routines and abandon any “dedicated space” in favor of varied locations.

I find it wise in such cases as this to eliminate the bother of back-and-forth leafings by either cutting out and clipping together the pages with the text of the thing, or, even more simply, purchasing two copies of the same work which can then be placed in adjacent positions on a comfortable table

Finally, we want most of all to acknowledge what has been profoundly important to both of us: the revisionary advice and consent of our husbands, Elliot Gilbert and Edward Gubar, and our children, Roger, Kathy, and Susanna Gilbert, and Molly and Simone Gubar, all of whom, together, have given us lives that are a joy to read.

Lives that are a joy to read.

"I'm suffocating," said Pilate. "Suffocating!"
With a cold, damp hand he tore the clasp off the collar of his cloak, and it fell on the sand.
"It's stifling today, a thunderstorm is brewing," rejoined Kaifa, staring intently at the procurator's reddened face and foreseeing all the torments yet to come. "What a terrible month Nisan has been this year!"
"No," said Pilate, "it's not the sultry weather that's making me suffocate, it's you, Kaifa."
